Food Stamps for the Rich
1 in 10 Americans are now receiving government food stamps. This is a very unpleasant statistic, but the numbers will likely beĀ more profound as the economy worsens in the coming months. By no means am I suggesting that those in dire need of food should be denied, but rather, I wanted to shed further light on the impacts of the deteriorating economy. Back in the 1990’s, Republicans were successful in demonizing those who received food stamps by referring to those recipients as “the lazy freeloaders of the welfare system.”
It wasn’t necessarily the case back then, and it definitely isn’t the case today. In fact, today’s freeloader isn’t the unemployed single mother, but rather the incompetent business executive. Nonetheless, while the 90’s marked the demise of social welfare, the present marks the expansion of corporate welfare. Issuing food stamps is a travesty, yet issuing private jet stamps is necessary to ensure that the economy does not collapse.
